At the Lausitzring, Maxime Martin did not conquer the result he was hoping for. The representative of the RACB National Team set the 16th time in qualifying and ended the race in 14th. Martin’s fastest lap was not only the sixth fastest lap in the race, but also the best by a BMW driver. It shows that the Belgian continues to make progress the DTM.
The eighth round of the DTM was marred by thick fog on Saturday. That caused slight alterations to the timing of the meeting.
“Free practice was shortened and now only lasted fifteen minutes”, Maxime Martin states. “The track was wet, but drying. That made the conditions even more difficult, because it was impossible to find one’s marks.”
The qualifying session had an identical scenario. “There was only one dry line. We also went into the wrong direction for the set-up of the car. In short, I only managed a 16th time.”
After a penalty for one of his colleagues, the Belgian could start the race in 15th.
“I had a good start and was quickly inside the top-10. Unfortunately, I was then hit by Paul Di Resta and the contact spun me round. I was back in 15th after that. At that moment my rain tyres – everybody started the race on wets – were beginning to suffer on the drying track.”
And as if that was not enough, the Belgian also got a drive-through penalty.
“Apparently I went to quick under yellow flags. Obviously I lost another couple of places because of that penalty. Fortunately, once I shod the option tyres things started to improve. It took a couple of laps to get my marks, but after that I managed to drive freely. That allowed me to set the sixth fastest lap of the race, the best lap time of any of the BMW drivers.”
After the race Maxime congratulated his team-mate Marco Wittmann, who became the new DTM Champion for 2014.
“Marco had a great season and thoroughly deserves this crown. Personally, I am disappointed with my result, but my lap times bring some consolation.”
