Overall conclusion is positive
In his first season in DTM Maxime Martin took 7th position in the final rankings, as 3rd of the BMW drivers. The representative of the RACB National Team was hoping to end his season with a good result – this Sunday saw the first retirement of the season for the Belgian – but he can still draw a positive overall conclusion.
Sunshine and tens of thousands of spectators: the tenth and final round of the 2014 season of the DTM ended with fireworks in Hockenheim, on the same track that held the season opener back in May.
Maxime Martin, the Belgian representative in this high level championship, did not have the final he had hoped for.
“Even during practice it was clear that it would be more difficult than anticipated”, the Belgian said. “My 15th spot in qualifying was disappointing, obviously. But the differences between the fastest time and the middle of the pack were small. My time in Q2 was only 348 thousands of a second slower than the time of the pole position. Just to show that the level here is very high.”
In the race the representative of the RACB National Team was not lucky either.
“I had a good start, and could pass my team-mate in the first couple of metres. Unfortunately I was harpooned off the track by another BMW driver only seconds later. My car was heavily damaged, but the team insisted that I would continue to race. The car was completely out of balance though, so I could not set any competitive laptimes. I even suffered a puncture as a late consequence of the contact, well after I changed my tyres. That second pitstop completely ruined my chances of scoring any points.”
Disappointing, but on the whole season Maxime Martin can still draw a positive conclusion:
“Of course it is annoying to end the season with a retirement. But overall I think that this first season in DTM went really well. 1 pole position, 1 win, Rookie of the Year, 7th in the overall rankings, 3rd of the eight BMW-drivers. That is nothing to be ashamed of!”
