“More competitive than last year”
Two good qualifying sessions, with 11th and 8th places on the grids, six points on Saturday and the satisfaction of being the first BMW-driver and a good comeback on Sunday, from 20th to 14th, after incurring a penalty: Maxime Martin left Hockenheim as a satisfied man.
The first race of the 2015 DTM season, a 40-minute race on Saturday, comforted BMW-driver Maxime Martin at the start of his second season: there is again a lot of potential. “I had a great start from 11th, immediately gaining a couple of positions”, the representative of the RACB National Team states. “It was a very intense race, with two safety car interventions. Not only am I very happy to finish in 7th, but I am also the first BMW-driver to cross the line in this first race of the season.”
For the Sunday 60-minute race Maxime qualified in 8th. The race started on a dry track, but one third into the raindrops came down. And that caused some problems for the RACB National Team representative in the prestigious German touring car championship.
“I had to take a drive-through after the stewards considered my leaving the pitlane after the tyre change an unsafe release”, Maxime explains. “With my BMW M4 DTM I had a small contact in the opening lap, which cost me some places. I had already regained a couple of positions, but after serving my penalty I dropped to the 20th place. I managed to finish in 14th however. It’s a pity though, because it was certainly possible to finish between 5th and 8th and take some important points.
Martin still had a positive weekend. “In comparison with the other BMW drivers I am a lot more competitive than last year, especially in Hockenheim where I only managed a 14th and 15th spot on the starting grid. This weekend was an improvement on that, even though the BMW was not at the best of its form in comparison with the competition and on a track that normally should suit us. So I am pretty happy with my performance, but on the whole we were a bit down on the competition this weekend. I think we still have some work to do.”
After this first meeting, Maxime Martin is 11th in the standings, with a total of six points. The next race is scheduled on the 29th May at the Lausitzring.
