«Back to the front on Sunday»
Mixed emotions for Maxime Martin this weekend in Moscow. After a miserable Saturday - Martin had to start from the back and finished last but one - the representative of the RACB National Team in the DTM managed to get his BMW third on the grid of Sunday's race. He came very close to claim a podium finish in Moscow as well.
Maxime Martin did not expect to repeat his choice performance of last year, when he took his maiden win in Moscow. But the performances of Saturday came as bit of a blow. "It was a very tough day", the driver of the RACB National Team confirms. "The best I could do in qualifying was a 16th place. In the race I managed to get a good start, but then I had to take evasive action to avoid cars involved in an incident. I even had to take to the grass to get passed two spinning cars. That's what you get when you start from the back... The consequences were that I was dead last and that I crossed the line in 18th and penultimate position."
But Martin managed to get all those troubles out of his head on Sunday. "There was a definite improvement, yes", the Belgian states, both relieved and surprised. "I set the 4th time in qualifying and could even start from third, after Ekström was penalised with three places on the grid."
In the race the #36 BMW confirmed that excellent form. "I again had a good getaway, even though Spengler was a bit in my way and I had to take to the grass again. I dropped to fourth, but due to an excellent strategy of my team, I climbed back to third, a position which I occupied for most of the race. Unfortunately, I got stuck behind a driver who had not yet taken his mandatory pitstop and I lost the advantage of DRS. Three laps from the end there was nothing I could do to hold off Ekström. However, when Green launched a suicide attack, I managed to keep him behind me. That way I finished fourth, as second of the BMW drivers."
The twelve points gained makes Martin the third of the BMW drivers in the standings, in which he is twelfth overall. But do not ask the reason behind the difference in performance between Saturday and Sunday. " I have no idea what caused that", the Belgian says. "I really have no explanation. Obviously we will look into it."
