A nice comeback and the title of Rookie of the Year as an added bonus
Maxime Martin crossed the line in sixth at Zandvoort, after having started the race in 16th. An impressive come-back, which also gave him the honorary title of Rookie of the Year. The representative of the RACB National Team has now an insurmountable advantage over the three other rookies of 2014.
Martin did not have the best of starts at the Zandvoort meeting though. During the qualifying session of Saturday the fuel pump of his BMW Z4 did not work properly, which meant that the Belgian was unable to use the power of his car to the fullest. "I could only set the 17th qualifying time”, Martin explains. Because of a penalty for another competitor, the Belgian could occupy the 16th spot on the starting grid. All was in place for a nice come back…"
“I took the start on the harder compound, but I got stuck in traffic for a while”, the young man from Brussels explains. “But it turned out to be a very hectic race, with a lot of contact between the cars. There were four safety car interventions. Because I could take on the softer tyres for the final phase of the race, I was able to overtake the other cars one by one. At a certain point I was 18th, but I still managed to cross the line in 6th.” Which gave Maxime Martin eight more championship points, putting him in sixth, with one more round to go. It meant that the driver of the RACB National Team is now certain of the title of Rookie of the Year 2014.
“It is only an honorary title, but I am pretty proud to have taken it”, the Belgian smiles.
“You can only become Rookie of the Year in one season. Nico Müller, Antonio Felix da Costa and Vitaly Petrov were the other Rookies this year, but I have enough of an advantage now to be sure of the title. I am also very happy to follow in the footsteps of Marco Wittmann, Rookie of the Year in 2013.”
With Wittmann finishing 2nd this weekend, and Martin 6th, Team RMG scored another 26 championship points, enough to conquer the teams’ title, only a couple of weeks after getting the drivers’ title as well.
